In the home based business opportunity that I am involved with, I have been doing SEO (Search engine optimization) for quite a long time. It has only been about 2-3 months ago however that I started hearing the term "long tail keywords" and to be honest, was a tad bit confused about what they are. Let me tell you!
Long tail keywords is just a new term for your longer keyword phrases. When you begin an SEO campaign, the very first thing you do is establish your domain name and specific keywords and keyword phrases. These keywords are based on what you believe people will type into their internet browsers and find your site. More than that, they are phrases that people might type into their browser that are looking for what you have to offer. This kind of traffic to your web site is of very high quality as far as conversion to sales goes. In other words, you have got what these people are looking for!
The keywords and keyword phrases that you are using for your home based business opportunity are the life force behind everything you are doing for SEO. Coming up with the right keywords is the single most important thing you can do for the SEO of your home based business opportunity!
There is nothing more important than this!! Nothing!!
I can not even begin to tell you how many times I have seen or heard of people (even those who claim to be experts in SEO) select keywords and keyword phrases for their campaign and they have search terms that nobody in their right mind would use...if they understood the principle behind getting traffic.
As a matter of fact, beware of this kind of person. They prey on the uninformed. For example, say you hire out to have someone do your SEO for you. Chances are you are paying very good money for this service. You have an internet business in which you sell high end candy. The name of your web site is called something like tastymorsels.com. The SEO person tells you, okay...I can get that to the front page of Google in no time.They write a couple of articles and voila, your web site is at the number one position for the keywords "tasty morsel".
Who really cares about that? Who is going to search for that term and find your web site?
Nobody!
Someone who understands SEO will tell you to get a new domain name for your URL which has 2-3 keywords imbedded in it. They will use a good keyword analysis tool and explore the options you have to get your site to the top of a keyword phrase that will bring quality traffic to your site. Your web site will be optimized for the keywords that are selected. Your article writing will be imbedded with those same keywords.
Okay, I am done spouting off. Getting back to long tail keyword phrases for your own home based business opportunity.
In your own SEO campaign, you will usually target some keywords in which the competition to get to the first page on a search engine for them would be difficult to say the least. A long tail keyword phrase is an extension of the difficult keywords that you would love to have.
If your main keyword phrase has a competition of around 50 million web sites which could bring a possible 2000 visitors to your web site each day, that might be extremely difficult to obtain. By using a keyword selection tool though, you might find some extended keyword phrases (longtails) that could bring you up to 100 visitors to your web site a day and the competition is only around 565 thousand web sites. I would say that is the way to go.
Even though you are aiming for something with less traffic, you could do multiple long tails to drive even more traffic to your site. In the midst of all you are doing, the high end keyword phrase you would love to have is part of the extended keyword phrases you have been working on.
In other words, by working on long tail keyword phases for your home based business opportunity, you are driving your web site up higher in the search engine rankings for those high end keywords as well!
